Was a bit difficult getting really good references, but ran across a couple old screencaps from when the old Animus promotional webcam thinger was running.

Here's the current state. Sill need to sculpt the bigsilver embellishment on the top, and make the gun & dagger (AC1 dagger sitting there as a placeholder!

Made a form out of insulation foam and tape thats about the same size as my forearm to work on :) The inner layer of leather is pretty simple.

The dagger is simply lashed over the bracer.

After laying out the outer bracer, tooling was doen aroud the edges, and the edges were rounded over. Used a sharpie to mark where the studs were going to go.

Prepunched holes around the edge :)

After dyeing the leather, I added in the studs :)

the straps were a bit tricky.. since they were so small, i decided to use nails instead or rivets

Used crazy glue to tack the straps into place, drove the nails trough, and crazyglued them after cutting the ends of the nails off on the inside.

and here's a couple images of the leatherwork for the bracer completed!

I'm no real seamstress here. So successfully creating patterns to sew has been hm.. whats the word?.. DRUDGEWORK.... yeah. thats it.. though it IS a learning experience, its not one of the more fun ones at the moment..

Tandy leather factory was having an early morning sale the day after Xmas,
So to break up the learning with doing something that I'm (very slightly) more familiar with, I laid out some armor since i needed to figure out how much I'd need to buy. tossed a tshirt over the doublet and laid it out with a sharpie (put a layer of press seal over it first, so i don't accidently mark it up)

after laying it out, I began making a mock up out of craft foam.

This is the mockup for the starting leather set, and though i'm not too keen on the front of his armos (they look like battlebras or something lol ) I LOOOVE the back, especially the leather one :)

A friend of mine managed to snag a black edition figure of Ezio off Ebay (*shakesfist* ), so will be get plenty of photos next time i see him. this'l be set aside as i get to work on the left bracer and finishing the tunic :)fevhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02541675197778234209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2348840438401828644.post-45608816105788066212009-12-24T11:17:00.007-05:002010-01-19T18:50:33.113-05:00general progress - 12-24-09Been pretty quiet on this blog, but rest assured, things *have* been happening

Did a lot of work on the tunic,

And on AC2's midnight release, thought it would be fun to bring my gear along..

...buuuut wound up hating it with a passion. The fabrics all wrong, and the lacy trim, ugh...

So I started over, choosing a different fabric this time, and being extra careful with the stitching.. I know very little about sewing, but did what i could to correct mistakes the second time around (ie., uneven stitching ) . Also dyed fabric for the first time, thought it turned out a bit lighter than i had expected after i dried it :)

magic, fairy dust, and a loooot of needle stabbings in the hands later, here's what I got: (AC1 parts used as placeholders til the AC2 counterparts are completed...

Well, the belts been done, just in time for AC2's release (i threw on what was done and ran out to the midnight release for the fun of it, though i couldn't pick it up til the next morning (ordered from another store duh me)

here's the completed belt, with sash underneath, and leather straps and all that fun jazz. Just remembered i need to add a couple bits onto the right side of the red undersash thinger though.. that'll cover up the hook n loop setup that makes it muuuuch easier to put it on :3

August 23, 2009
Studied the heck out of refs, and did some laying out of the belt... lots more buckles n bits on this thing than the segmented one of Altairs... thankfully most refs of it are the same or similar enough to figure out. Theres a massive difference betwen jazzhands and the cgi trailer though, namely the leather sitting between the "calipers"/hooks on the belt. The design on the calipers and plate at the top are very different as well. the cgi trailer has griffons, dragons, and a pair of scales (scales of justice?) incorporated into it..

One makes the actual thing wearable, considering the direction of the posts on the bucles in the front, the other requires a lotta switching around. I like the Jazzhands one though. Got some "magic" going under the red sash to get it to work right.

The belt insignia sculpt is progressing.

Painfully slow. There hasn't been a lot of good time to work on them, but at least the left hook looks decent so far. I'm gonna take a good look at the leaves on the design, and if they're the same, I'll see if making one full one and making a press mold would save some time, tweaking each one as necessary for each of the leave.

Laying out design of the belt as well.

September 10, 2009
More work has been done on the belt insignia, I'm hoping to have it done by Anime Weekend Atlanta, but that'll be tough with the other work that needs to be done.. here's a couple pics of the insignia in progress :-)

Here's a closeup of the leaves, been sanding them smooth and more even. After doing this and sanding the other hook, I'lll carve the scrollwork into the sides of the hooks :)

This will be cast in fiberglass reinforced resin.

The belt insignia sculpt is finally done, and I did a quick paint test with acrylics & metallic powder to see what I'd like to fix before casting. the paint will be stripped off by soaking it in water and a brush, and I'll make a mold and resin cast it.

The top left is the original sculpt, top right is the the mold I made using silicone mold rubber (a company called Smooth-on makes it), bottom left is a cast made, (dusted the mold with aluminum powder, then poured resin in), and bottom right is the finished insignia after i cleaned off the excess around the edges, painted it, added bolts to the back and mounted it onto a heat bent plate of cintra :)

Tis a lil out of order here, but this photo you can see the backplate which the buckles are mounted to. I laid out the belt leather in cardboard before going to actual leather.
I didn't use a straight piece of leather since it would dig into my ribs, and had to make it out of two pieces to save on leather. I can't say i like how the splice turned out and went and used rivets to secure it to save time, but I'll be aiming to replace that strap and properly sew it on. But this'll have to do for the time being, cuz Dragon*con's in 5 days and i still have to finish a painting.

It would be nice to have a machine to sew this.

There's some wave looking design on the shoulder strap, but since i couldn't get a definitive design there, i fudged the design.

On the good end, gotten much better with rivets. It took pliers and a good amount of force to pull it apart, so the next time I make stuff that i won't mind being permanent, rivets instead of Chicago bolts! will need to get a rivet supports bit though (or make one!) so the heads stop getting dented.fevhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02541675197778234209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2348840438401828644.post-85279322356445808722009-08-24T13:13:00.002-04:002009-10-06T08:38:13.940-04:00A couple progress notes. While at a day convention, I worked a little more on the belt sculpt, not a massive difference, but refined the left "hook" more. It has a much closer curve to the design, though I need to make sure they sit at the right height, so the plate on the top doesn't sit too high and make the thing look weird.

Also noticed that a couple refs of the cape have it terminating a lil differently in the front (its a lil higher up in some refs). Since it looks so big on the side view, I'm thinking of nipping a a lil off the front edge to help reduce its mass. the back looks right though. I'll also be changing the top edge of the cape :)

pauldron clips are coming along slowly, I have a press mold of the clip, and am finishing a press mold of the engravings, so i'll press one out, and be able to press in the engravings without having to fear messing the whole thing up (in which case i'll just try again.)

Attempt to cord up the rings turned out reasonably well, though I'll have to try again, because they came out a little too long.

I don't know if the entire cape assembly will be done by D*con, because I still need to nail out a commish, but whatever state its in, I'll most likely wear anyways. Because i wanna run aroond with a cape on my gear.fevhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02541675197778234209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2348840438401828644.post-27518342313622744372009-08-22T18:33:00.007-04:002009-10-11T14:27:28.186-04:00making the capeThis thing was actually a bit more of a pain than expected, but here's the result.

I added a cord for times when a breakaway cape isn't necessary, and will go and change out the velcro to industrial strength velcro. (the standard stuff isn't quite strong enough). Will bring the velcro closer to my neck on the pauldron, so when i flip the cape back, it'll be more likely to stay.

Since it'll sit over a poofy shoulder pad thinger, It was laid out over a bit of fabric I put under the pauldron as a placeholder.

Decided to attach it using velcro, because i don't want it to get caught on something. If you've seen "The Incredibles", you'll understand why XD..

Here's a rough layout, using an old bedsheet. Pose is the infamous Jazzhands, as I have the best shot at figuring out the shape of the cape using that.

Decided to use a red satin that's a wee but darker than the refs, since there's nothing sneaky about a seriously bright red cape, even if its a lining, When I get around to the black "upgrade" version I'll go with the brighter red :)

My leather hide was too small for the pattern I came up with. Purchased a couple different browns fabrics for it... ones a silky color (with dull back) and the other is a suede type. Maybe would have been a good idea to bring the pauldron with me to Joanns', because they're much darker than the pauldron. i'm actually leaning toward a medium brown sound/light blocking suede valance i bought at Walmart.

Here's what i came up with before modifying it (was taken in a mirror, so I flipped this image).

The result seemed more curvy than Ezio's , so i went back and modified the curve. This was the result.
AC1 gear used as a placeholder til i get Ezio's tunic a'goin'

September 10, 2009
Dragon*con was over the last weekend, and thought it would be and opportunity to test out the cape and pauldron (besides being fun). It actually compliments the AC1 gear :)

The velcro held okayish, but the segment in the front needed more velcro. I went back and sewed a bit of cord onto it, and secured it to the bolts already in place on the pauldron. Should i decide to run around, i just won't tie it down in case it gets caught :)

I sanded off some of the thickness of the leather with my belt sander so it would be easier to get a padded look. Though its not as padded in the refs, but i wanted to have it look padded anyways :)

<lj-cut text="progress notes & pics">It took about 3 days to do this once the layout was done. The sewing was hell because i had to align, punch and handsew through 3 layers of leather on the edges, and 2 layers and foam padding in the center.

I wasn't aware that there was stuff that I could apply to mask off the scrollwork (so when dying the thing it would stay light), so when it dyed, the color actually wound up a lil darker than the untooled areas.. </lj-cut>
<lj-cut text="progress notes & pics"></lj-cut>
<lj-cut text="progress notes & pics">
</lj-cut>
After not liking the results of painting the scrollwork with acrylics (it looked unnatural), I took an exacto and spent a day n change scraping the coating off to bring back the natural leather color i used the gel instead of the dye that penetrates the leather.

though I liked the texture and feel that xactoin' it gave, I didn't like such a high contrast between the natural tan and the brown, an seeing as scratched leather takes dyes & stains differently (and Tandy's over an hour away) I went back with the same dark brown gel, and rubbed it back in.. Because it was scraped up, the gel took a stronger hold, and the scrollwork is now much darker than it originally was, and i actually really like it :)

Should i decide to redo this and want the scrollwork, i'll instead stain the scrollwork with a lighter brown, toss some resist over that, THEN gel the thing up with my dark brown.
I've pretty much decided that instead of Here's whats going on so far!

Reference gathering!

First off (of course, I googled around and found a bunch images of Ezio (usually his "jazzhands" pose though) , as well as the E3 trailer, developer diaries, Game Informer magazine, and whatever else I could scrounge up. Some of them are in the links list to the left.
Gametrailers.com had some quicktime movies that I could screencap, so i capped just about anything that could be of use :)

A bunch of places i regularly check are on the linklist to the left.

Its been a challenge to basically figure out and piece everything together with guaranteed accuracy, since new images are trickling out bit by bit, and theres a ton of new upgrades, weapons, and things that Ezio can change out n game (i saw 3 different bracers in the dev diary alone), and of course, even with a single design, Ubisoft never keeps things 100% consistent (ie. the belt, XD)

Planning!

Because planning is really important, I've gone and brainstormed (a LOT), done sketches, and stared at refs so much I'm surprised they haven't been burned into mah retinas. . Usually by the time I get physically started on a part, I'll have already spent the same amount of time (if not more) drawing up plans and/or building it in my mind than it actually does to make it. It helps reduce the amount of errors when actually constructing it, which is a really really GOOD thing when it comes to leather or other expensive materials.

With Ubi's constant variations, I'll try to work out any kinks then (ie the posts on the belt bluckles face a direction that won't hold the belt on), and get to take advantage of the differences to "pick n' choose" from variants that I like the most (and sneak in personal touches if I feel like it) :)

Despite the resources out there that some have made or done, this project will still be done strictly based on Official references, as others will have a tendency to put their own personal touches into their work, and it just won't be the same as my visions for it. Ubisoft already gives us more than enough leeway to add them personal bits!fevhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02541675197778234209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2348840438401828644.post-54065487148085741592009-08-17T23:21:00.001-04:002009-09-24T22:12:33.181-04:00Welcome to my AC2 cosplay project journal!
Why this journal?

I enjoyed making the last cosplay project (Altair, go fig), and quite a number of folks have been asking questions and such about it. I've been finding that notes, wips, and such have been scattering all over (much like the last project), and there isn't one specific place to refer to, for both folks that ask, and for personal reference :)

Well, cosplay.com's journal isn't working for me, and this Livejournal account has been gathering a thick coat of dust since 2006, so I thought I'd clean it out, give it a fresh lick o' paint, and set up a journal dedicated specifically to an Ezio cosplay I'm working on.

I actually began gathering info and planning and such as soon as the announcement for ACII came out, and began actual making components in mid July, so the first couple journals or so will be pretty much a round of "catch up".
From there, this will be updated as i get things worked on, along with general notes and such. It'll be a long project, there's a LOT to do, but eh, Gotta start somewhere!

It's evolution baby!
This won't be as much of a "build and debut" project, as much as it will be an "evolution".. since I don't have much time to myself anymore, but still want a cheap excuse to run around in a cape XD. I'll be basically starting with the cosplay gear I made for Altair, and "evolve" it to Ezios. Swap out the gauntlet, belt, etc as I finish parts and such. Will look like they had a lovechild, or some similar result of some slash fandom WANK. .

-!fev
fevhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02541675197778234209noreply@blogger.com0
